Painful Play

Gayathry J •  India •  21

I was 12. Being an only child, I spent a lot of time alone in my home and it happened on one such day during summer holidays. It was hurting from when I woke up but I thought it was something else and it was when I went to the washroom, I understood this was it. I remember the moment. I was both shocked and somewhat angry yet relieved too.

Since I knew where my mom kept the pads, I got it but I had no idea how to place it. It was uncomfortable but still, I didn't feel like calling my mom. I thought I could handle it and I had this art class. I acted like nothing happened and went there.

But our sir didn't show up that day, so we went out and played running games. I had a good amount of pain but I didn't want anyone to know so I played normally for about 3 hours straight in the sun. By the end, I was so deeply in pain and pressing on my tummy.

But to my relief, my mom came to pick me up and never before was I so happy to see her. My mom commented on my sweaty appearance and I didn't act weird at all. It was only when we reached our gate that I told her, "Mom, the blood came." And that was it. She was shocked. She was surprised how I could even run with that kind of pain. I'll never remember that day.

Never Forget

I was eleven when it came and I cried uncontrollably. My vagina was bleeding out so I was certain that something was wrong. That moment will never be forgotten. I remember my period story like it was yesterday. I woke up with excitement because it was summer and I made plans to meet up and hang out with my best friend. There were no signs or symptoms that I would be meeting my period instead in the next fifteen minutes.

After brushing my teeth and cleansing my face, I turned on the shower and prepared myself to shower. Before I could get in, I felt a sudden urge to use the toilet. I quickly plopped down on the toilet, started peeing and instantly I felt a glob of warmth leave my body. Anxious to see what it was, I looked down and there it was. It was blood. No, I'm serious. It was blood dripping from my vagina.

Confused and scared from what I was seeing, I instantly cried out for my mom. “What did I do? Did someone hurt me last night?” So many questions flooded my mind in those fifteen seconds it took my mom to get to me. When my mom opened the bathroom door and saw the blood trickling down my leg she smiled and said “you got your period.” Those four words changed my life forever.

Big Red Button

Okay. So mine isn’t too bloody but I have a funny one that happened a few years later that I will include at the end as a bonus!

Okay, so I started mine a little late. I was in seventh grade if I remember right. It was the day before Christmas break and I was gonna be heading out of town with my girls for the celebration of the lights up north. I had been having bad cramps so I figured I would be starting soon. It wasn’t like I didn’t know what a period was at this point. I had to pee really badly, so I asked to go and I brought the emergency bag I had with me in case. So I went pee. No blood. Okay.

About twenty minutes later, I had to pee again. Okay, weird but not enough to raise a red flag yet. So I just went to the same stall I was in earlier and I noticed that there was some bloody toilet paper on the ground. I thought nothing of it. I picked it up and flushed it. Then I looked down. Fuck a duck to Tuesday street. It was me. I missed the toilet with the paper the last time I went pee. My underwear was ruined. I was lucky my mom packed an extra pair of underwear. My god, that was one of the most painful periods of all time. I remember biting through a pillow during the cramps.

Okay, now for the funny one. So I was in my dad's truck after a half day of exams. I had run out of pads and we were in the drive thru at the pharmacy. I told him that we need to get home like now. He asked me why and I was blunt as ever. "Because my pad is gonna explode and I just ran out of extras!" He told me to run in the pharmacy and grab some. I’m like hold up! Pads are not cough drops. You can’t just grab whatever is on the shelf. It's personal. And you do not get the wrong products when a woman is on her period. That is like pushing the big red button and this is a big red button you don’t wanna press.

That’s my story. Hope y’all enjoyed. Have a great day.
