I had just come back home from vacation when one day I felt a very strange pain in my stomach. I went to the bathroom and to the shock of my life, I found that my undergarment was fully stained BLOODY RED!

At first I cried like so loudly because I thought I was dying. I started screaming when my mom came in and calmed me. We had a good laugh as she told me everything. I was aware of it, but I guess I was not expecting it in the manner it happened. It took me a month to sort out the process of it all, then it was all cool.

I was 16 years old. It was a Sunday morning and I had massively overslept. I woke up from such a deep sleep. I felt SO groggy. I looked at the time - it was MIDDAY! As I got up from my bunk bed, I looked down at the mattress and there was the biggest circle of bright red blood I had ever seen. It must have been about 30cm in diameter. I shouted downstairs to my mum straight away, “I think I’ve started my period!”

I was crying because I felt so rough and groggy as well. She was on the phone with my aunty and shouted in the phone, “Oh my god, Rose has just started her period! She’s become a woman!" And then she congratulated me. I did not feel like I had won anything except for a lifetime sentence of adult nappies. But then I discovered tampons a few days later and I never gave it a second thought!

I was so scared to tell my mum that I hid it for 4 months. But my parents surprised us with a holiday to Portugal. I realized I was going to be on my period on holiday where we went to the pool most days. The holiday came and I still hadn’t confessed.

The second day of the trip, it came. I was so scared, I still didn’t tell her. I knew I couldn’t use a pad in the swimming pool so I stuck a pad in and didn’t go in the water and just sunbathed all day.
