Officially Mortified

It's funny because I don't remember the actual event. I don't remember seeing blood or being scared. What I do remember is my mom taking me to our small town King Soopers and telling everyone— EVERYONE— that we were there to buy pads.

We bumped into my 2nd-grade teacher, my pottery instructor, my old soccer coach. She proudly told every person we saw that I was "officially a woman." At the time I was mortified. In hindsight, it was pretty hilarious.

Mixed Signals & Mixed Feelings

So I’ve had cramps for like 3 weeks, and then today when I went to the toilet around 4pm, at first I didn’t notice anything but then I looked at my underwear and there were big brown stains. At first I thought it was just discharge (I’ve been having lots of discharge lately) then there was blood on the toilet paper when I wiped.

I then understood it was my period! At first I freaked out, then I was happy because I’ve been waiting so long for my period. I’ve been wearing a pad ever since then (it’s 10 pm now) and the pad is all clean as I haven’t bled anymore yet.

Put to the Test

Mehardeep K •  Delhi, India  •  15

I was 12 and I work up tired like any other day. I had a test at school that day so I couldn’t miss it despite the headache I woke up with. Half the school day passed and I started feeling a little wet around my genital area. Even though I was fully aware of the whole process of menstruation, I just thought I felt a little amount of pee right there.

Towards the end of the day, I was walking through the corridor and my English teacher suddenly came and held me by my hand and I was so shook. She comes up to me and says, “you’ve stained your skirt.”

I had to rush to the washroom and clean things up and had to borrow a pad from the school clinic. Gosh, it was the most uncomfortable pad in existence. It was one of the most awkward experiences ever considering the fact that periods are still considered taboo among many. My day ended with a tub of ice-cream and binge-watching so it was all good. :)
