Toilet Terror

Paula •  Durham, UK •  27

I was 11 years old and at primary school. I went to the toilet, pulled down my blue dog knickers and to my horror, there was blood! So much blood that I thought I was dying.

I hid in the toilets, crying my eyes out until a teacher came in. She explained what was going on and I remember feeling relieved that it was perfectly normal.

For me it wasn't really scary because I was eager to menstruate. But when it came, I couldn't tell what it was. I thought I soiled my P.E. kits in the field.

Later, I went home and told my mom and sister that I think I've started my period. That's when it hit me. I was scared now. My mom was able to always buy packs of pads, so it has not been a tough road apart from the cramps.

So far, it has been... an experience.

Period Exam

It was in class 8, third term, when I started experiencing pains in my lower abdomen with a bloated stomach. The next thing that came into my mind was a running stomach, so I rushed to the latrine. I was so surprised that I was bleeding down there. I had no tampons and the only thing I had was a piece of paper and a handkerchief. I had to do something.

There was an exam that period so I couldn't go home and clean up. I stayed in school but the day was the longest... I kept praying that I don't stain my green uniform. I panicked and I didn't tell anyone, even my friends. That day I was so tense and confused. I hated being on my period but I got used to it after five years.
