Dinner With Aunt Flo

I remember my parents agreeing we would go celebrate when I got my first period when I was a kid. When I got my first period my Mum was at work on night shift, I ran down to my Dad announcing that Aunt Flo had arrived!

He told me where Mum kept her stash of pads, we waited up and told her I am now a fully fledged woman! The 3 of us went for a fantastic meal out the following evening and still regularly make fun of periods and discuss how my Mum is dealing with the menopause ♥

Buzzer Beater Period

Soooo I was an older period haver. I was halfway through 8th grade by the time I got mine. I had fellow athletes tell me, "you're so lucky you haven't gotten yours yet." But in middle school, all you want is to be just like everyone else.

When it came, I had just finished a basketball game. It was around January 6th, probably the first game back after the Millennium. I went the bathroom at St. Joseph's Elementary School. It was brown.

I didn't think I had pooped myself as other bleeders have shared. I don't think I totally knew what it was either. I think the cramping that came later was more of an indicator.

I was the first of three girls in my family. We are Irish Catholic and I had little understanding of my period. My mom showed me how to use a pad and I was good to go! It wouldn't be until I started this podcast with my friends at the tender age of 31 that I fully understood the physics of a period.

Mom Knows Best

I was in 6th grade (11 yrs old) and I was home alone. My mom was fulfilling PTA duties - probably painting a moose for the school carnival (this is in Minnesota, mind you). I had been feeling a little weird that day, and when I went to pee, noticed something a little brown on the toilet paper.

Because of my solid public school health education, I was like "oh, hey period." I called my school and asked the secretary for my mom. After I told her, she gave me this pro-tip: place the pad higher in your undies than you think - your period likes to creep up. SOLID ADVICE MOM.
